Who this day is for

Active day-trippers with a car who want a national-park waterfall highlight plus a civilised valley food stop — without inventing a second full itinerary the same day.

Pass & prep

  • Valid Parks Tasmania pass for Mt Field.
  • Check Parks alerts (trees, snow, road conditions toward higher areas).
  • Boots with grip; rain shell; spare warm layer even in summer.

Morning — Mt Field

  • 07:30–08:00 Depart Hobart; fuel and snacks before the park.
  • Russell Falls boardwalk as the reliable highlight for mixed abilities.
  • Add Tall Trees or a longer forest walk only if weather, daylight and fitness allow.
  • Skip higher alpine spurs if ice, high wind or late start make them unsafe.

Afternoon — valley corridor

  • Descend toward New Norfolk / valley cellar doors after a picnic or park cafe if open.
  • One quality food stop (cellar door or New Norfolk lunch) beats three rushed tastings.
  • Optional short river-flat stroll if legs remain cooperative.

Evening

  • Return to Hobart; wildlife dusk risk on unlit stretches — slow down.
  • Stretch, hydrate, and keep the next day lighter (estuary walk or rest).

If the park is closed or weather collapses

Fall back to the valley day trip without guilt. A forced waterfall walk in a gale is not a better story.
