Who this day is for

Visitors with a hire car (or confident drivers) who want the “classic valley” day without racing to Lake St Clair. Works in most weather; cellar doors may need bookings on weekends.

Packing & prep (15 minutes the night before)

  • Confirm Salmon Ponds / cellar door / lunch opening times for your date.
  • Fuel in Hobart; card payments are widespread but cash helps at some small stops.
  • Layers — valley mornings can be cool even in summer.
  • Optional: Parks pass only if you add Mt Field (separate itinerary recommended).

Morning — Hobart to New Norfolk

  • 08:30 Depart Hobart north-west via the Brooker / Lyell corridor toward New Norfolk (~30–40 min without heavy traffic).
  • 09:15 Coffee and a short river-flat walk in New Norfolk to stretch legs. Use the town as your logistics hub.
  • 09:45–10:15 Optional: heritage street / antiques browse if that is your interest — keep it short.

Late morning — Salmon Ponds

  • 10:30–12:00 Salmon Ponds (Plenty): heritage hatchery story and landscaped grounds. Confirm hours and entry fees the day before.
  • Families: allow playground / picnic buffer; food service on-site can change seasonally.

Lunch & afternoon — one primary food stop

  • 12:30–15:00 Choose one focus:
    • Cellar door tasting (e.g. Derwent Estate or Stefano Lubiana), or
    • Booked destination lunch (The Agrarian Kitchen when available — book well ahead), or
    • Riverside meal near the Woodbridge / New Norfolk precinct.
  • Do not stack three cellar doors and a degustation. A second short tasting is optional only if the first was quick.

Return to Hobart

  • 15:30–16:30 Drive back before dusk wildlife peak where possible.
  • Evening: waterfront dinner or rest. Tomorrow’s cruise or estuary walk will feel better if you are not exhausted.

Rain plan

Shift weight to New Norfolk indoor heritage / cafes; keep one cellar door with indoor tasting; skip long outdoor garden time. Do not force Mt Field in horizontal rain on this “easy valley” day — use the dedicated park itinerary instead.

Optional swap

If weather is brilliant and legs are fresh and you started by 8:00, replace the afternoon tasting with a short Mt Field waterfall walk — only with a Parks pass. Prefer our Mt Field itinerary for a full park day.
