Who this trip is for

Confident self-drivers who want the “source story” without treating the Lyell Highway like a racetrack. Not suitable as a single long day from Hobart and back if you actually want to enjoy Lake St Clair.

Book before you leave

  • Highland lodging (Derwent Bridge / Lake St Clair area) — peak season sells out.
  • Parks pass if entering Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park.
  • Any lake ferry segment at St Clair if you want it — seasonal / weather dependent.

Day 1 — Hobart to Lake St Clair / Derwent Bridge

  • Morning: Depart Hobart with a full tank; snack stops as needed on the Lyell Highway.
  • Midday: Lunch en route or at Derwent Bridge (options are limited — don’t arrive starving at 3 pm with no plan).
  • Afternoon: Lake St Clair visitor area walks and lakeside time; ferry only if operating and pre-checked.
  • Overnight: Highland lodging. Early night — weather windows matter more than nightlife.

Day 2 — Hydro lakes & south toward the valley

  • Scenic stops at publicly accessible hydro lake viewpoints or ramps — respect Hydro and local signage.
  • Do not try to “collect” every lake name; pick two worthwhile stops max.
  • Continue into the Derwent Valley for a slower late afternoon.
  • Overnight option A: New Norfolk. B: push to Hobart if you need a shorter overall trip.

Day 3 (optional) — Valley recovery day

  • Salmon Ponds or a single cellar door; short walks only.
  • Return to Hobart late afternoon; avoid stacking another long highland drive.

What to skip if short on time

Drop optional lake spurs first. Protect the Lake St Clair experience and one quality valley stop rather than collecting roadside signs.

Safety non-negotiables

  • BoM forecast the night before and the morning of highland travel.
  • Wildlife at dusk — slow down.
  • Cold water and changeable alpine weather year-round.
  • Parks pass and track alerts before Lake St Clair national park time.
